makeness, the brainchild of kyle molleson, returns with his white label . off the back of a minor science remix being played out by the likes of jamie xx, ben ufo, avalon emerson and more last summer, the ep marks the producer’s most dance oriented ep yet. the roots of temple works date back to the producer’s time in leeds, which played an important part in both this release and his wider love for dance music. while there, molleson recorded a friend s percussion project, g-bop orchestra, at an old textile mill in holbeck, known as temple works. the vast openness of the space made for the best natural reverb and is weaved throughout the title track. it was also in leeds where the producer discovered cosmic slop, an all welcoming party with a sound system built by founder and resident dj, tom smith, with donations going towards raising money for local charity map (music and arts production). slop’s intimate and flawless sounding room played a huge part in cementing makeness’ love for club spaces.

skatebard is back on untz untz records. this time in collaborative mode with stiletti-ana to present: the finsk-norsk body language society. the short version of the story goes: skatebard and stiletti-ana meet at a party they both played at hosted by untz untz in berlin 2011. stiletti was there as part of the duo jesse. a drum machine gets a skate signature on it at the end of the night. jesse remixes skates confirmation bias track for untz untz in 2013. fast forward to 2017 and here we are with the deal that was unknowingly signed in 2011 fulfilled. this record was recorded, mixed & dubbed live straight to a two track stereo tape recorder, during a fine january weekend in 2017 at stiletti’s haista ii studio on the island suomenlinna outside helsinki. we hope you like standard moderne, a moderne standard.

buttering trio, founded in 2010, consists of kerendun on vocals and tenor saxophone, rejoicer on loops and synths and beno hendler on bass. all three band members are also producers, mostly active between tel aviv and berlin. combining colourful studio productions with sweet yet poignant lyrics, the trio rearranges the definition of beat making, mixing up all genres. the new album threesome was recorded in three different studios in three different cities london, berlin and tel aviv, during 2015 and 2016. it is the bands 3rd lp released on raw tapes records (not including their 1st ep party bear).

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. real d. burst on the scene last summer with his breakthrough track rhodes that . one year on and the release is still in high demand, fetching upwards of £50 on the cogs. matt & stu were invited to play at his party in his hometown of bordeaux late last year and the idea of an ep for wolf was discussed over the best red wine and cheese the southwest of france had to offer. in a strange but true story a 3d glasses company in silicon valley called real d came knocking and with the threat of legal action, his name had to be changed & real j. was born. another great addition to the ever-growing wolf music roster.

it is making my blood boil. man, my jaw is hanging down listening to this stuff. read the email from butthole surfers man and producer, paul leary, when he heard the demo for what would become the debut philipp gorbachev & the naked man album. philipp gorbachev, the russian musician and dj, has been throwing killer parties and making some of the most innovative and exciting electronic music to come out of moscow in years. in 2014 he released his debut album silver album but when invited to perform a live boiler room he had something else in mind: a band scenario. the resulting concoction was not something locked into a 4/4 beat but rather a much more organic, groove-based sound with funk-strutting bass lines and live drums that rolled and flurried around the beats that jumped around leading the charge of the songs along with gorbachev’s damo suzuki-like vocals. taking that experiment into the studio, i dont give a snare is a wild ride that jumps genres, switches paces and alters tones frequently. the opening goodman exploding in intense rhythms and heavy, spiralling riffs that at times recall sabbath but the ever-shifting drums and gargling electronics give a wonky freshness that feels impossible to place into genre. whilst gorbachev cites a range of influences from beck to blind willie johnson as being core to him, the primary motivation is the live nature of the project itself. the main influence is the constant live experience we have as music players and performers. i want to get the most out of every party, every jam, and every dancefloor.

soul jazz records’ new boombox 2 is a new selection of early rap music from the period 1979-83, with barely a household name in sight. featured here are some the earliest hip-hop records that came out of new york city following the enormous commercial success of the first ever rap record, ‘rapper’s delight’ by the sugarhill gang, in september 1979. artists and producers alike tried to jump aboard the new commercial possibilities of hip-hop. by the end of the year there were 30 hip-hop singles, all released by independent new york labels. the following year there were over 100 more, and so on.
